Tom Watson has backed the campaign to protect the Freedom of Information Act.
The deputy leader of the Labour Party, Tom Watson, has voiced his support of a campaign which aims to protect the Freedom of Information Act.
Watson has also said that Labour will "shortly be announcing a consultation to establish whether the FoI Act can be broadended and strengthened".
Currently, more than 1, 000 people have signed a petition which is urging the Freedom of Information Act minister, Matthew Hancock, not to weaken the act.
The Freedom of Information Act is currently under review by the Government's Independent Commission on Freedom of Information.
There are widespread fears in the media world that the review will mean that the Freedom of Information Act will be changed to include new exemptions and fees for information requests.
Tom Watson has been quoted saying: "I associate the Labour Party wholeheartedly with this campaign. The Freedom of Information Act has held public institutions to account and if it is diluted it will mean taxpayers lose out. We will shortly be announcing a consultation to establish whether the FoI Act can be broadened and strengthened. It is one of the most important pieces of legislation that journalists have to hold the powerful to account."
