Social media is increasingly becoming the place readers go to find news content.
The rise of Facebook as a news source means that publishers find it increasingly difficult to make money from readers.
It is becoming increasingly difficult for publishers to attract readers, with many being lost to social media platforms such as Facebook, according to the Reuters Institute for Study of Journalism.
The annual report on digital news noted that Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter are undermining traditional publishers' business models.
This is coupled with a rapid transition to mobile content and a consumer backlash against digital ads.
44% of those surveyed use Facebook to read, find, watch, share, and comment on news each week, making it the dominant social media platform.
The number of individuals using mobile devices to access news has risen to 53% from 37% just two years ago.
Despite this rise, the use of tablets for news reading has fallen in the UK.
