Tabloid newspaper The Daily Star is to halve its cover price from 5th October 2015.
The newsagents trade body, the NFRN, have said that retailers were told that the price of The Daily Star will be falling.
During the week, the newspaper will cost 20p per issue.
On Saturdays the cost will be 30p per issue, while on Sundays it will cost 50p per issue to purchase.
Currently, the title costs 40p during the week, 60p on Saturdays and £1 on Sundays.
Northern & Shell is attempting to justify the move as a very bold strategy to inject some overdue sales and excitement into the category. Well, I disagree. In fact to me such a move can only be described as commercial suicide.
Will independent newsagents be prepared to do double the work to get the same return as before? I dont think so.
Instead, I wouldnt be surprised if members react by cutting back their Daily Star supplies or even removing the title from display. Based on the calls Im getting from members it seems that the Stars wont be coming out in many independent retailers stores from next week. said Ralph Patel, NFRN president.
The Daily Star has a circulation of 416, 801 according to ABC. This figure was down 11.6% year on year according to the latest figures.
The Sunday edition of the newspaper has a circulation of 261, 425, which was down 13.9% year on year according to ABC.
