Research has shown that there are 550 active local and hyperlocal news websites across the UK.

These 550 websites are run independently of the regional newspaper industry.

They are, in most cases, used to fill gaps in news coverage for a local or hyperlocal area.

A net reduction of 200 local newspapers in the UK has been seen in the last 10 years.

There are now thousands fewer regional journalists employed than there were 10 years ago.

 

The 550 local and hyperlocal news websites that were discovered are run, in general, by volunteers.

A small minority of the 550 employ professional journalists.
