Rebekah Brooks New Chief Executive of News UK

It was announced on Wednesday 2nd September that Rebekah Brooks will be the new chief executive of News UK, following her clearing of all charges.

Brooks resigned from News Corp following the phone-hacking scandal in 2011, however is set to return to her position as all the charges have been dropped – the Crown Prosecution Service are considering bringing corporate charges against News UK. She was found not guilty of conspiracy to hack phones, commit misconduct in public office and pervert the course of justice by hiding evidence.

Overall the scandal has seen just two journalists convicted, both avoiding custodial sentences, out of around 22 originally set to face criminal charges.

Upon returning on Monday, Brooks sent an email to her colleagues regarding the ordeal, she said, “It would be wrong to dwell on the past but it would be wrong not to mention it. Many colleagues and their families have suffered a great deal in recent years and my thoughts are with those who still face unimaginable stress and uncertainty”.

She also spoke about her return: “It is a privilege to be back and many thanks for the warm welcome. I’ve worked for this company since 1989 doing a variety of jobs from making the tea to becoming CEO twenty years later. It’s hard to describe how good it feels to be home. And the Sun is shining”.

Robert Thomson, chief executive of News Corp, commented Rebekah’s “expertise, excellence and leadership will be crucial as we work to extend our relationship with readers and advertisers, and develop our digital platforms to take full advantage of our brilliant journalism”.

Brooks will also take responsibility for acquiring and developing digital assets such as video news agency Storyful.

News UK have also hired Tony Gallagher, former deputy editor of the Daily Mail, as the editor-in-chief of the Sun.
