Trinity Mirror Increases Hacking Provision

Provision for dealing with the phone hacking damages claims has been increased to £41M by Trinity Mirror.

Trinity Mirror's hacking provision previously stood at £28M.

The increase to £41M comes after Trinity Mirror's appeal against a £1.2M damages payment was rejected by the Court of Appeal.

Trinity Mirror's provision had previously been increased from £12M to £28M.

All of the sums awarded have been higher than the previous highest sum given by a UK court in a privacy case.

Before the Trinity Mirror phone hacking scandal, the highest sum was £60, 000, which was won by Max Mosley, former Formiula 1 boss.

Max Mosley had sued the News of the World in 2008.

Mr Justice Mann explained by the sums have been so high in the Trinity Mirror cases: “The fact that they are greater than any other publicly available award results from the fact that the invasions of privacy involved were so serious and so prolonged.”
